Fiumicino Airport -Leonardo da Vinci (30 km from center of Rome)
Taxi service
Make sure to take an official taxi service (located at the taxi stand outside of the airport). Be sure the meter in the taxi is switched on (it starts at 2.44 € ). The fare should not exceed 45/55 € (inclusive of luggage) for up to four persons.
Important notice about taxis.
Use only the official white metered taxis with the meter switched on. The meter starts at 2.44 € (they cannot be on the road if the meter doesn't work). Each piece of luggage costs 1.04 € extra. Sunday, holiday and night supplements are already built into the meter tariff automatically. Unofficial taxi services try to snare unsuspecting travelers and charge absorbent prices because they are not monitored by the local government. Always be sure to catch taxis at official taxi stands.
Train service
The fast train that connects the Fiumicino Airport to the city is the one to Termini Station. The train ride takes 30 minutes and departures are approximately every half hour. Tickets cost 9.50 € and can be purchased from automated machines in the train station at the airport or from one of the “Tabacchi” convenience stores at the airport. Be sure to stamp the ticket at one of the machines on the train track before boarding the train.
From Termini you may take an official taxi from the taxi stand for not more than 15/20 € (inclusive of luggage). Make sure the meter is switched on (it starts at 2.44 €).
If you are traveling light you might want to take the Metro instead. Take Metro Line B from Termini to the “Colosseo” stop. Tickets can be purchased for 1 € for one of the “Tabacchi” convenience stores inside the train station. The ticket must be stamped in the gate to enter the metro. Once you exit the metro station, cross the road to the Colosseum and take the 85, 117 or 850 bus uphill 2 stops to Via San Giovanni in Laterano. The same ticket you used for the metro is valid for the bus ride as long as you complete the entire trip in less than 75 minutes. Take extra care as pickpockets operate on public transport.
