Programs
The Lay Centre offers the laity a unique opportunity to explore the history and theology of Rome. A variety of formats include weeklong and weekend study programs designed for parishes, universities, and other organizations.   Programs are shaped by the Catholic traditions of liturgical prayer, erudite study, lively dialogue, and pilgrimage to various Christian sites in the Eternal City.

Come as Pilgrims
The Lay Centre’s programs are designed to open the city to you as a pilgrim. Rather than rushing from site to site with brief explanations of historical information on sites or individual works of art, we offer the chance to take time to meditate on the mystery of Christ and his Church as reflected in the city of Rome.

Uncover a layer of the city’s history as it has been inhabited and transformed by Christianity.  See the sites where popes have shaped history, where saints have fed the poor, and where mystics have contemplated the deepest mysteries of life. Our unique courses will take you on a pilgrim’s journey, allowing you the time for reflection, spiritual enrichment and prayer.

Directions into the City from the Airports of Rome

A. From Fiumicino Airport - Leonardo da Vinci (30 km from center of Rome)

Taxi service
Make sure to take an official taxi service (located at the taxi stand outside of the airport). The Rome Local Transport Authorities guarantee a rate of 40 € from Fiumicino Airport (if your destination is within the boundaries of the Aurelian Walls), including luggage for up to four passengers.

Important Notice About Taxis

Use only the official white taxis who already have the meter switched on.  The meter starts at 2.33 € from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays; the meter starts at 3.36 € on Sunday and public holidays.  Every night from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am the meter starts at 4.91 €.  Each piece of luggage costs 1.04 € extra.  N.B. Sunday, holiday and night supplements are already built into the meter tariff automatically.  Unofficial taxi services try to snare unsuspecting travelers and charge exorbitant prices because they are not monitored by the local government. Always be sure to catch taxis at official taxi stands.

Train service
Leonardo Express is the fast train that connects Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station. The train ride takes 30 minutes and departures are approximately every half hour. Tickets cost 12 € and can be purchased from automated machines in the train station at the airport or from one of the “tabacchi” convenience stores at the airport. Be sure to stamp the ticket at one of the machines on the track before boarding the train.

From Termini you may take an official taxi from the taxi stand for not more than 15/20 € (inclusive of luggage) to any of the places of lodging suggested above.  Make sure the meter is switched on (for rates see above).

If you are traveling light you might want to take the Metro instead. Take Metro Line B from Termini to the “Colosseo” stop. Tickets can be purchased for 1 € from one of the “tabacchi” convenience stores inside the train station. The ticket must be stamped in the gate to enter the metro. Once you exit the metro station, cross the road to the Colosseum and take the 85, 117 or 850 bus to the stop indicated by your hotel. The same ticket you used for the metro is valid for the bus ride as long as you complete the entire trip in less than 75 minutes.

Take extra care as pickpockets operate on public transport.

By car
If you are renting a car at Fiumicino follow signs for "Roma Centro" and then to the Colosseo.  From the Colosseo follow the directions given by your hotel.

By car hire
A fully licensed limousine service can be arranged to pick you up from the airport and bring you to your hotel, or the hotel may have shuttle service from the airport. Contact your hotel for more information.
